Understanding the Root Canal Procedure in Potomac, MD
Contrary to popular belief, root canal pain is actually not as severe as the pain that comes from the infection itself. In fact, a root canal actually feels very similar to having a filling placed. Once patients of Taff & Levine DDS are finished with their root canal procedure in Potomac, MD, they will be able to use their tooth just like normal without pain or discomfort.
Understanding Tooth Anatomy
Before understanding how a root canal works, it is good to know which part of the tooth we will be treating. The inside of a tooth contains a soft tissue that is known as the pulp. It is here along with the canals within the roots that the nerves and blood vessels reside. These parts play an important role in supplying nutrients to the tooth.
How a Root Canal Works
Before the procedure begins, the tooth will be completely numbed to eliminate root canal pain. Then, an opening is created on top of the tooth to allow access to the pulp. Taff & Levine DDS will use a special tool to carefully remove the tissue and clean out the pulp chamber and canals. You may need to have x-rays taken to ensure all the pulp has been removed before the filling can be placed.
Once the filling has been placed, your tooth will be less likely to become infected. You will need a dental crown to strengthen the tooth and prevent further damage. If the tooth has been severely damaged, Taff & Levine DDS may need to rebuild it with a post and core.
After the Procedure
Root canal pain is usually very minimal or nonexistent after the procedure. With proper care, your tooth will last just as long as the others. To learn more about getting a root canal procedure in Potomac, MD, contact Taff & Levine DDS to schedule your consultation today!
