Treating the Causes of Receding Gums in Potomac, MD

A receding gum line can be brought on by a number of different issues. Some of these are hygiene related while others are genetic or behavioral. Patients who are suffering from receding gums in Potomac, MD should contact Taff & Levine DDS for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Gum disease

Gum recession is a common result of moderate to severe gum disease. Gum disease occurs when the buildup of plaque and bacteria begins to irritate the gum tissue and causes destruction of the underlying connective tissues and bone. The gums tend to follow the shape of the bone. If the bone recedes, so will the gum tissues. It is important to get treatment as soon as possible before further complications arise.

Genetics

No matter how well you brush and floss, some patients are just more prone to gum disease and gum recession than others. The only way to avoid serious problems is to recognize the symptoms and seek treatment as early as possible.

Bruxism

Patients who suffer from bruxism often develop gum recession as a result. This is because the pressure created by constantly grinding or clenching the teeth puts stress on the gum tissue and muscle attachments which causes recession. Although bruxism will at times correct itself, Taff & Levine DDS may recommend a protective nightguard in some cases.

Misalignment

Similar to bruxism, misalignment creates stress and puts pressure on the gum tissue in certain areas which can lead to recession. It also makes it difficult to clean the teeth which can increase the chances of gum disease as well.

Brushing

While daily brushing and flossing is the primary method of preventing gum disease, it is also possible to overdo it. Brushing too aggressively can destroy gum tissue and contribute to recession. We recommend using a soft bristled or electric toothbrush at least twice a day for two minutes each time.

Gum recession can lead to other oral health complications if left untreated. To learn more about the causes and treatments of receding gums in Potomac, MD, contact Taff & Levine DDS today!
